マザーグースの用例（２）

●アルクという会社から毎月「ＦＥＮガイド」（テープ１巻・テキスト１冊）というのが出ています。学校でとっていますので、いつも適当に聞き流しています。その８月号のテープを聞き返していましたら、突然、"Humpty Dumpty"がどうしたこうしたというのが、飛び込んで来ました。ちょうど東京支部で、藤野先生のお話を聴いてから２日しかたっていませんでしたので、聞こえてきたのだと思います。
　車の運転中だったのですが、大急ぎで巻き戻して聴きなおし、やや不安でしたのでテキストも学校でめくってみました。卵業界の大幅落込みには、うってつけの表現ですね。

The egg industry took a Humpty-Dumpty-size fall between 1984 and 1988, losing a billion dollars in sales--in part because of the cholesterol problem. Now the government, after a one-year study, is revising downward the egg / cholesterol figure by 22 percent. The Ag(riculture) Department study, conducted in cooperation with the egg industry, credits the lower figure to better testing methods, and also to a change in the egg industry's feed, husbandry, and breeding practices.

Timeの表紙に久々マザーグースの用例を見つけました。アメリカの証券会社ドレクセル・バーナム社が、倒産したと言う特集につけられた解説の一部がこれです。

The collapse of Drexel Burnham, the house that junk built, is only the latest of Wall Street's woes. So where are the tears?

　ここで言うjunkは、junk bond、額面価格より安く買う危険の多い証券を指しています。もちろん、この元唄は、This is the houe that Jack built.で始まるあの積み重ね唄です。

少し古いのですが，子供部屋を片付けていたら"MAINICHI WEEKLY"(Feb.8,1992)が出てきました。その１面に"HOT CROSS BUNS ARE NICE,TOO"と題した記事があり，イギリス料理もまんざらではないと，イギリス女性が書いていました。最後のところに，ホットクロスバンというイースターの前のグッド・フライデーに食べる十字形の型を付けたスパイシーなパンのことが言及され，マザーグースの唄が引用されていました。

Well, be that as it may, how to put England on Tokyo's gourmet map? Maybe Nakamura-Sensei will help me carry a tray on my head and ring the bell, as we call out "Hot cross buns, hot cross buns; one-a-penny, two-a-penny, hot cross buns; if you have no daughters, give them to your sons; one-a-penny, two-a-penny, hot cross buns." We might at least put nikuman out of business!

Food: A Dainty Dish to Set Before the King　( p.50, Newsweek, August 16, 1993）

「キングの前に置かれた美味しい食事」

　エルビス・プレスリーの伝記"The Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley"が出版されましたました。プレスリーのdainty dish（ごちそう）が、実は甘いもの、サンドイッチ、ピザ、などで、junk foodの食べ過ぎが死亡の原因という。この見出しは、"Sing a song of sixpence"の１節なのです。

　キングは、エルビスのニックネームでした。マザーグースの場合には、黒ツグミが出てきて王様は大喜びしたのですが、歌謡界の王様プレスリーは、過食症になったということを、うまくこの見出しは伝えています。

（１）There was a little girl who had a little curl

　アメリカの雑誌"TV GUIDE"(Sept.11 - 17, 1993)にマザーグースが引用されていることをマーフィー夫人より教えていただきました。

Howard was like the little girl with the little curl in the nursery rhyme: When he was good, he was very, very good, and when he was bad, he was horrid. By and large, Howard and I had a great time together ( even though you couldn't tell that from the way he bad-mouthed me in the ABC hallways and carved me up in his books). The Howard Cosell with whom I teamed up in 1971 -- the year I joined Monday Night Football -- had a memory like a databank. Plug him in and he could probably recite the 1950 spring-training rosters of the entire American League....

● Rain, rain, go away
　たまたまノースカロライナの先生から送ってもらった新聞の切り抜きに、マザーグースの一節がありました。天気予報のキャプションです。

●　もう一つ、タイムの２月１３日号　(Man the Dikes! p.14) にオランダの洪水で人々が浸水の被害を受けているという記事がありました。そのキャプションにも、

RHINE, RHINE, GO AWAY:
　Brimming earthworks at a point where the storied river's main stem forks into its Waal branch near the German-Dutch border.

とありました。ライン川が洪水をもたらした張本人。「ライン川、ライン川、あっちへ行っとくれ」と、　Rhine とrainをかけてあるとことが見事です。

（１）Boys and girls come out to play　

　Daily Yomiuri (March 5, 1995)に付いてきたThe Independent紙の記事の中にタイトルが、 "Boys and girls come out to die"というのがありました。記事の内容は、スリランカのゲリラ組織が少年少女の「特攻部隊」で編成されているというものです。本唄のBoys and girls come out to playならば、子供本来の姿ですが、 come out to dieというのは、何ともやるせないものがあります。

雑誌からです。
What are little boys made of?

　"In Britain" (July, '95)に出ていた次号予告の部分に、Sugar and spice and all things nice という一節がありました。インド料理の店の紹介なので、思わずこのspice の入ったマザーグースが連想されたのでしょうか。
